Broadcast Journalism

I never planned on making videos. To be honest, it seemed incredibly daunting, as there are so many variables that go into broadcast journalism. Last school year, my staff and I were fighting to complete all SNO Distinguished Site badges, and we could not complete the multimedia badge, specifically the video section, despite several attempts. After being gently forced into making a video on powderpuff, all of the components, the editing, the b-roll, the interviews, went really well. And the best part was, SNO accepted it. I made two more to complete our badge requirement, our badge requirement, the process became smoother, and I fell in love. I’ve been making videos ever since, creating two videos per quarter for the past year on exciting topics. While I still get stressed editing and quickly producing content, the payoff is worth it. I am especially proud of this video. While it did take me a bit to get used to all of the functions of Premiere Pro, I think I definitely got the hang of it afterward. Something that was challenging about creating this video was taking the b-roll, as it was extremely dark outside and I kept having to play around with both my camera and phone settings to make sure I was getting good footage of the game, cheering and halftime performance.

This video was a challenge all around. It was extremely windy outside while I was interviewing two of my people, so I was panicking that a lot of the audio was ruined because of the harsh wind sound. However, I was able to to use the denoise feature on Premiere Pro in order to fix the audio, and I think it did a really good job at making the audio listenable.

Purebred Productions debuts "Clue"

With this example, a challenge was that there were two separate casts for the production of "Clue," so I wanted to make sure I interviewed actors from both casts, so my viewers could see their individual perspectives on the show and show the differences between the casts.

I made this video in conjunction with Nadia's story on the new flag football program at Hagerty. A challenge for me was getting the b-roll of the girls at tryouts, as it was extremely bright out, and difficult to follow the ball while also zooming in to see the girls.

For the interviews, I knew I wanted to interview the people that I had good b-roll shots of, so I could show off their highlights while they were talking about the game.

Videoing theater productions can often be difficult due to the timing of tech rehearsals and constant changes in lighting. It can also be difficult to work around the actors' performance schedules in order for them to get interviewed, but I was luckily able to interview people who had off-campus periods, and they graciously came back to school to be interviewed. I think that this video was really successful in showing off what the musical was like and all of the interesting visual aspects.

Girl Up celebrates Earth Day

While the event this story was about, Girl Up's shoreline cleanup, was unable to go on as planned due to an unexpected algae bloom, I was still able to get high-quality b-roll of the club members picking up trash throughout the Little Econ River area.
